HIDDEN DEPTHS
'In the end she decided it was safer to swim in her own depths,
than to drown in the world that others had created...'
Hidden Depths: What Lies Beneath
She once said that we know more about what is happening in space than in our own oceans. Why do we as women so often choose to look to the outside and fail to understand the world that lies within?
On the outside of our bodies we wax, trim, flex, starve, sculpt, pluck, dye, inject and tuck to craft the ideal feminine exterior. What of our feminine interior? Do we understand what lies beneath our folds, our hidden depths and deep in our holes? How do we feel within and how do we begin to truly feel within? Do we know and comprehend these ‘sacred hearts’? How do we learn to understand and love these ‘sacred parts’?
Through our opening we can enter the inner world of the body and through birth we open our inner body to the outer world. This complex and deeply emotional experience is so seldom expressed or truly understood. This is profound. When someone enters our bodies it connects us in ways that we cannot even begin to comprehend. It is our inner and outer selves merging in a divinely feminine sacred experience, one that has sadly been diminished and commercialised. One that we feel, but have been told we should not express or appreciate.
'SHE' lives in an inner hidden world, as a protected and disguised flower – complex, mysterious and layered. This inner world is like an ocean, vast and deep, extending far beyond the physical plane. Her strong currents move silently beneath the surface, unexplored caves shimmering with hidden light, and tides of emotion that swell and recede. Light filters gently through these waters, casting dancing shadows that reveal and conceal in turn.
This ocean within holds the sacred depths of feeling, memory, desire and knowing – ever shifting, ever flowing in rhythms uniquely hers. But too often this inner ocean is ignored or feared; the call to dive beneath the surface goes unanswered, drowned out by the noise of external demands and societal expectations. We are programmed to keep these depths ‘hidden’, to stick to the surface, and diminish our vast totality for the patriarchal world around us requires, to keep the mysteries of our bodies and souls hidden away.
Yet within these dark waters lies the true source of feminine strength and wisdom — the wellspring of creativity, healing and profound resilience. When she is revealed, she is beautiful, fascinating, layered, complex, powerful, and delicate. SHE is miraculous.
The journey inward is one of courage and tenderness, an unfolding of the self’s delicate nature. As women, we open ourselves to the world and, in doing so, expose our most vulnerable and beautiful parts. Our bodies symbolise this duality and a unique vulnerability women experience in the world. The need both to both hide and reveal the sacred inner self and her hidden depths.
By choosing to explore these depths, to meet her and gaze beneath the surface, we awaken to the full spectrum of our being — the light and the shadow of our femininity. And in embracing this complexity, both the power and delicate nature of the feminine, we return in truth, learning to navigate the tides and depths of our connection and honour our unique duality.
Together, we can bring our divinely feminine selves forth into the world, shining a light into our magnificent depths and the complexity of all that we are. But first, we must gently expose her to ourselves and marvel at the vast, wondrous ocean that exists within us all.
